About the Author

Bill Shuey was born in 1943 on a cattle farm in rural Missouri. He served twenty years in the United States Air Force, worked as a quality-control supervisor on nuclear power plants, and later ran his own businesses.
Today he writes full-time from the banks of the St. Johns River in Central Florida — westerns, murder mysteries, and a twelve-book espionage series that draws on the world he once knew from the inside.

On their way back to the ranch, five drygulchers try to steal the money from the cattle sale. They survive the attack and meet two men who will become cow hands on their ranch. A young Lieutenant stops at the Circle BS and spends the night with his detail. The following day they are attacked by several Arapaho Indians and are slaughtered to a man. A second detail of soldiers is sent from Fort Lyon to find the first column, and Stumpy is asked to lead them. They find and bury the soldiers. The same group of Arapaho attack the horse farm belonging to Billy and Tipi. The Circle BS continues with its crossbreeding program and takes sale stock to the mining camps, while drygulchers try to ambush Stumpy on his way back from a sale.

The question becomes whether Ranger Branson will survive and solve the train robbery, or if he will ride back to Fort Worth in a pine box.

The Colorado Territory is the story of the Bar TC's move from No Man's Land in the Indian Territory to Las Animas County in the Colorado Territory. Before the trail drive even starts, Klu saved a white girl from Indians, had a run-in with buffalo hunters, and fought off a group of Comanche. He buys land and files homestead claims for 160 acres for each of the Bar TC crew. While on the trip, he marries Melody Rose Goodwill, the girl he rescued from the Indians. The trail drive from No Man's Land to Las Animas County is only about fifty-five miles. The problems they had with rustlers and Indians made the trip seem like 1,000 miles. The remainder of the story centers around the building of the ranching operation and fighting to keep the land they have settled on. The story illustrates the hardships, trials and tribulations of building a ranching operation in the Old West.

The Range War
Klu and Shad complete the construction on the Bar TC ranch. Melody gives birth to a healthy boy and the future looks great. The Colorado Cattlemen's Association decide that the best way to defeat the drought conditions of 1868 is to drive out all the farmers and small ranchers and use their land for grazing. First, the Lanswing ranch, the Slash L, finds themselves in the crosshairs of the Cattlemen's Association hired guns. They refuse to sell or give in. Next in the sights of the hired gunmen is the Bar TC owned by Klu Klinger and Shad Benfold. First Sprout, the young Indian boy, is shot and then Klu gets in a gunfight. The odds are greatly in favor of the Cattlemen's Association. They have the numbers, they have the majority of the grazing land, and they have the hired guns. All Klu and Shad have on their side is being right. Will that be enough is the question.

Gray Bear
The McNeal sisters decide to stay in Colorado Territory and file for land under the Homestead Act. When the men of the Bar TC return home from helping the McNeals build their cabin, they discover that seven horses have been stolen during their absence. Mark and Klu tracked the horse thieves. They followed the tracks to the Sprinkles farm and found the Sprinkles dead. They caught up with the four horse thieves and hung them. Klu is ambushed by Gray Bear and a group of his braves. After fighting them off, he managed to escape. Shad accompanied the McNeal sisters home from the Bar TC ranch and is mauled by a mountain lion on his return home. Becky McNeal comes to the Bar TC ranch and nurses him until he recovers. Rachel McNeal is abducted by Gray Bear and a couple braves and is taken to the Arapaho village. Mark tracked the abductors and rescued Rachel. Marshal Simon Butterworth comes to the Bar TC and gets Mark to help him track three men who robbed the Mason & Ganow stage, killed the shotgun messenger, and took the Army payroll. Mark finds the cabin the bandits are using, a gunfight ensues, and all three bandits are killed.

Bitter Creek

The outcome is in question and someone is going to die. Jeff meets and woos Madeline Shoemaker. As their romance blooms, yet another event involving Apache occurs at his cabin on Bitter Creek.
